The metric I feel is important and will be detailed is ERA+. Pedro Martinez in his third season for the Boston Red Sox posted a 1.74 ERA during the 2000 MLB season, when the league ERA was 4.92, registering him a 291 on a scale of 100. ERA+ is scaled so that a value of 100 means dead average, pitchers with a score above a 100 perform above average. The pitcher’s ERA+ is the same as the league’s park-adjusted ERA. To put Martinez’s ERA in perspective, we need to adjust it to take the league's performance into account, along with the games at Fenway, where he made 13 of his 29 starts. ERA+ is the best tool for this statistic, which is nothing more than a ratio of the park-adjusted league ERA to the park-adjusted ERA of the individual pitcher, with the decimal dropped for ease of expression. One important thing to note is that ERA+ is inversely proportional to ERA; a low ERA yields a high ERA+. Therefore, the higher Martinez’s ERA+, the more impressive his season is. Pedro Martinez had the same success in Montreal during the 1997 season playing at Stade Olympique. Where he pitched 18 games at home, had an era of 1.90, pitched 96 innings, allowed 96 hits, had 31 earned runs, and 9 home runs, walked 46 batters, hit 6 batters and gave up 3 triples. Then in 2000, the magical year, he pitched 13 games at home, had an ERA of 1.84, pitched 98 innings, allowed 64 hits, had 20 earned runs, 20 runs, also 9 home runs, walked 15 batters (0 intentionally), threw 1 wild pitches, hit batters 4 times, and balked 0 times? On the road, he pitched 16 games, had an ERA of 1.66, pitched 119 innings, allowed 64 hits, had 22 earned runs, 24 runs, and 8 home runs, walked 17 batters (0 intentionally), threw 0 wild pitches, hit batters 10 times, and balked 0 times. Know ERA leader in the history of the game won by such a healthier margin. In conclusion, Pedro Martinez crafted the greatest pitching season ever en route to his 2000 AL Cy Young Award.
